How Many People Are In Your Shower?

How Many People Are In Your Shower?

How Many People Are In Your Shower?

This morning I showered with 10 other people! The first ones to step in were my sister, my brother and his lovely new girlfriend. We chatted about how sad I felt that due to my back injury I couldn’t have them here in my little Devon cottage this week. I kept saying how sorry I was and asked if we could arrange a date for a few weeks ahead. This led down all sorts of paths where some dates worked for some of us, but not for others. Then my accountant stepped in reminding me that I needed to get my 18/19 accounts to her. I told her that I was rather concerned about the amount I had earned during this period and the plans I had about making some positive changes to my finances for the next tax year. Next to join us all was a lovely neighbour, we talked about how we could meet up on Friday night at the local pub and perhaps sit out on the green and have a drink or two. And then in stepped someone I haven’t seen for ages! A very dear and very loved ex-boyfriend. I told him how much I missed him and we talked about what we’d both been up to since we last saw one another. I got quite tearful and wished I could turn the clock back and perhaps do things differently, he agreed and then we both cried. As he wrapped his arms around me lo and behold some of you, my Facebook friends, popped in. For goodness sake, this was becoming a bit of a tight squeeze! So there we all were, having all sorts of conversations, some good, some not so good, some which made me anxious, some which made me laugh and some which made me cry. To be honest with you, it was exhausting!

Shower finished I stepped out and wrapped myself in a towel. But what had happened to my shower? Did I for one moment appreciate the beautiful hot water cascading over my body? Was I aware of it relaxing my tired and aching muscles? And perhaps most importantly, did I feel and acknowledge any gratitude for what I was experiencing? I mean, how many people on our planet don’t even have fresh water to drink, let alone bathe in?

I take so much for granted in my life, the shower being just one example. If only I had spent that time in total appreciation and gratitude, instead of wasting it on useless conversations! Not only would I have enjoyed the experience fully, but I would probably have only spent half the time in there, thereby saving on my heating bills!

This for me was just another example of how being in the moment is so very, very important. There are many times like the shower throughout our day, and if we could only be there and feel them fully, instead of taking our stress and worries with us wherever we go, wouldn’t life be so much easier?

So next time I take my shower, and hopefully, next time you take your shower, let’s do it alone. Unless of course, you have one very special ‘real’ person in there with you! But that’s a story for another time and perhaps you can share it with me over a glass of Pimms one day? 😉
