So what exactly is Wellbeing?

So what exactly is Wellbeing?

“We define wellbeing as having 10 broad dimensions which have been shown to matter most to people in the UK as identified through a national debate. The dimensions are: the natural environment, personal wellbeing, our relationships, health, what we do, where we live, personal finance, the economy, education and skills and governance.” ONS Reflections on Measuring National Wellbeing July 2013
 
Well yes, I agree with all of the above, but it does rather bring up the question…
 
Where the heck do we start?
 
Actually, the answer is easier than one might think. We start with ourselves.
 
If we’re not experiencing a state of wellbeing in our internal lives, how can we expect the external world around us to feel anything but chaotic, muddled, confusing, out of balance, and sometimes even a damn scary place to be?
 
SO HOW DO WE CREATE OUR OWN SENSE OF WELLBEING?
 
First and foremost it’s all about Self-Care.
 
What do the words ‘self-care’ bring up for you? Things you have to pay for? Expensive massages? Holidays? A spa-day?
 
And the immediate next thought? “I can’t afford it”. “I don’t have the time.”
 
Well, my friends, self-care can be as simple as ditching old habits that you absolutely know no longer serve you. Like spending way too much time on the computer or watching TV, while those fabulous books you have on your bookshelf remain un-read. Or taking a long, luxurious, undisturbed bath with some relaxing essential oils, lights out, candles on, and breathe….
 
Perhaps setting 10 minutes aside each morning (after the children have gone to school) to listen to a guided meditation or some deeply relaxing music.
 
Maybe it’s to break old habits like continually looking at your phone for Facebook/Instagram/Twitter updates?
 
Or how about a gentle walk to reconnect with nature (my favourite)?
 
The list goes on and on and on and I’d love to hear some of your own ideas.
 
Let me leave you with this last thought.
 
SELF-CARE IS NON-NEGOTIABLE!
 
Without it, we cannot enjoy the richness that life holds for us. Without it, we cannot properly care for our loved ones. Without it, we cannot even begin to heal the planet.
 
We cannot run on empty! Simple.
